The Hundred Headless Women

hhw1Pamela Joseph has completed a new hand-made book titled The Hundred Headless Women. The name pays homage to Max Ernst’s The Hundred Headless Woman, a brilliant novel of collages and engravings from 1929. Joseph’s book is based on a series of wood-burned kitchen cutting-boards displaying women in perilous situations, executed between 2001 and 2006. The images were originally created for the artist’s traveling show, “The Sideshow of the Absurd”.

hhw2The Hundred Headless Women is a codex format of three volumes encased in either a roll top wooden box or a linen fold-over enclosure.

The wooden roll-top box is laser cut with the artist’s signature drawing of the hundred headless woman magic trick, an image that also is foil stamped on the linen case. hhw3The outside covers of individual books are in vibrant Chinese red and feature the ink-drawing studies for the cutting boards in embossed form. The books present the traditional Chinese string bindings with butterfly fold pages. The first volume includes essays by Sue Scott and Molly Tambor with a foreword by James Surls. Volumes II and III contain images lavishly illustrating the project.

The Hundred Headless Women is dedicated to all the women throughout the world whose lowly status, appalling circumstances and hardships are a source of pain and inspiration to the artist.

Linen cover edition of 425
Wooden roll top edition of 75

This project was jointly produced by The Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University and MA Nose Studios.
