Joseph’s work has been described as “well-executed, powerful,
and edgy, combining large-scale work with intricate detail” by
The Colorado Council on the Arts, who awarded her a Fellowship in
2001. The Sideshow has also been
picked as a “favorite” exhibition by art writers in New
Mexico, Colorado and the Midwest for being “funky,” “freaky,” and “fascinating”.
Joseph has received numerous awards including a Visiting Artist Fellowship at
the American Academy of Rome for Winter 2003. Her work has been internationally
exhibited in Berlin and Copenhagen, Paris, Barcelona, and recently in “Open
Source” which
travelled to the Academy of Fine Art, Beijing, China and Luxun Museum in Shenyang,
China. A new body of
work, The Adventures of Pussy Marshmallow,
was included in the traveling exhibition and catalogue, “Comic Release:
Negotiating
Identity
for a New Generation”.
The Sideshow is currently on view at
Georgetown
University, Gallery 101 Walsh, from January 13-February 22, 2005.

“Pamela Joseph’s Sideshow of the
Absurd explores the role and power of women in 21st–century
Western society. The exhibition’s title intimates the ultimate
meaning of the installation: that the century–old tradition
of viewing humans with unusual physical properties as entertainment
is not only absurd, but tells far more about the viewers and their
culture than the attractions being viewed.” — Barbara
Bloemink, Ph.D., Curatorial Direector, Cooper-Hewitt National Design
